about

We believe well-designed spaces can restore connections to ourselves, to each other, and the natural world, offering moments of belonging in a culture that can feel isolating.  Every project is rooted in its sense of place, drawing on context, solar orientation, views, landscape, terrain, and materials to create environments that feel grounded, restorative, and enduring.

Each project begins with attunement to a client’s needs, values, and aspirations. The strongest design solutions are achieved in the open, collaborative space where “no idea is a bad one.” The design process should be enjoyable and is structured to manage risk, offering clarity at every stage, from initial concepts through move-in. By identifying challenges and opportunities early and exploring a wide range of ideas, we help clients make confident, informed decisions.  With over 27 years of professional experience, Tim Tessier leads the process and offers a wealth of creative solutions and insights.

Tim’s past experience as a managing partner and co-owner of a 14-person architecture firm gives him insight into efficient business and design practices.  His expertise in streamlined project processes provides time-saving value to clients and consultants.

architecture

Project types range in size, style, location, and function. All project styles are welcome! Tim has worked in a variety of locales, from Guatemala to the Catskills. Tessier Studio brings the same care and thoughtfulness to every project, regardless of type.  We are especially adept at blending modern detailing and sensibilities with central Virginia vernacular architectural styles to create timeless structures rooted in the native Virginia landscape.

planning

Tessier Studio offers planning studies for a variety of scales, from a family residence “village” to a full retreat center facility.  Often, a master plan is the first step in understanding how a property can be best utilized for an owner’s goals.  This effort leads to a phased approach that provides a road map for immediate and future work.  The value that this process brings enables clients to spend their resources wisely and to plan their next moves.

consulting

Tim’s specialty is quick analysis of project possibilities through feasibility design studies.  He is often hired to visit a property and meet with a potential buyer to evaluate options for development. This offers a client-buyer the opportunity to work with a skilled and experienced designer to confirm whether a site appears suitable for the intended vision.

let’s work together

in a client’s words

Working with Tim was an outstanding experience from start to finish. He designed and oversaw a major addition and remodel of our Charlottesville home, and his work was nothing short of exceptional. He blended the new design seamlessly with the original style of our house and neighborhood, while introducing a fresh, contemporary aesthetic that feels natural and timeless. Because we were living out of state during the project, having someone we could fully trust was invaluable — he not only ensured the highest quality standards but also gave us complete peace of mind. His communication was excellent, he respected our budget, and his creativity brought our vision to life in ways we couldn’t have imagined. He collaborated seamlessly with the contractor (whom he also helped us select), and years later, we remain thrilled with the results. My wife and I have worked with several architects before, but he is by far the best — we would not hesitate to hire him again for any project.
